Bringing conservationists and ecologists together
Despite the great overlap in methods and goals, cooperation between movement ecologists and conservationists does not seem as strong as it could be. Rascha Nuijten (Niels Stensen Fellow 2020) investigated this. She spoke with leading ecologists and conservationists from around the world, all of whom are involved in tracking animals through GPS technology.
Despite good intentions on both sides, the different internal motivations for doing their work, and the different external pressures in their respective fields, turn out to be very different. This ensures that collaborations are not always found or successful. Good communication about expectations and everyone's commitment before a project starts could prevent this.
