Traumatic brain injury is a major public health problem, causing death and disability worldwide. Surgical management aims to improve outcome but remains surrounded with uncertainty as to who should be operated and how. The research carried out by Thomas van Essen during his year as a Niels Stensen fellow will clearly delineate surgical indications. He expects to optimize treatment guidelines in an effort to reduce the burden of the debilitating condition that is traumatic brain injury.
