Worldwide, millions of people die of pneumonia every year. New treatments for this disease are therefore desperately needed. Recent research by Bas Haak (internist in training at Amsterdam UMC and Tergooi MC) shows that bacteria from the gut may offer protection against pneumonia.
Thanks to a grant from the Niels Stensen Fellowship, he will use microscopic organs at the University of Cambridge to investigate what mechanisms underlie this.
