On Thursday, August 30, 2018, the Niels Stensen Conference took place at Kasteel Oud - Poelgeest, in Oegstgeest.

The theme Open Science. was introduced by Prof. ir. Karel Luyben, National Coordinator Open Science. Open Science was discussed in parallel interactive workshops in the following areas:
    1. Pharmaceutical Research. Can the closed shop of the pharmaceutical industry benefit from open science?
    2. Social inequality. Does open science lead to less inequality and less poverty?
    3. Big data. Are new tools and techniques a blessing or a danger to society?
    4. Sustainability. Sustainability in relation to interdisciplinary research using open science.
    5. Valorization & impact. Society demands both and forces interdisciplinarity.

The workshops were largely led by our own alumni, who will contribute their research practices as examples. In addition, some external speakers were invited, including from NWO and IBM.
